In 2011, we began a series of conversations exploring what ACC could do as a greater expression of our love for God, and our neighbors both in our community, and around the world. From those discussions, the AND Initiative was born.
Since that time, it has become part of the purpose of ACC to "love our neighbors as ourselves" through various avenues in our own backyard. These activities include providing food and blankets for the homeless, raising funds and volunteering at crisis pregnancy centers, serving “Church Under the Bridge”, partnering with Children's Hunger Fund, and volunteering with the San Antonio Food Bank. Our goal is for ACC to continue having a physical presence throughout San Antonio.
In 2012, we were introduced to the residents of the West End Apartment complex on the far west side of San Antonio and our AND Initiative West End began. Each month, a group from ACC serves the children of this community through educational tutoring and mentoring and investing quality time in these families. Throughout the year we partner with West End for out of school and back to school celebrations, National Night Out, and summertime Bible studies. During the month of November, ACC provides the residents of West End with food to restock their community center kitchen as well as their individual pantries. In 2013, ACC collected nearly 1,000 pounds of food for West End! In December, families of ACC adopt families from West End and provide Christmas gifts for almost 100 kids and senior adults as well as a Christmas lunch for the entire community.
No matter what your abilities may be or how much time in your schedule you may have, AND Initiative West End is a great opportunity to invest in our neighbors and “live life in the AND!”
